Cicadas are coming to Central PA this year! The Brood XIV emergence is going to be happening in the coming weeks, which will make for some great dry fly action this summer! If you need some patterns, check out TCO Fly Shop for your cicada needs. The Hoov’s Cicada is a favorite pattern – Caleb tied 25 dozen of them for TCO, and you can order them online at the provided link.

If you’re looking to tie up some cicadas for yourself, here are some great resources: George Daniel’s tying video with 3 great cicada patterns, Hoov’s Cicada recipe sheet and an article that Dr. Greg Hoover wrote about the 17-year cicadas.
In our personal boxes we have a number of different floating cicada patterns, along with some different sunken patterns. Hook sizes that we’ve been using are 6-8, with wings made of either krystal flash, EP fibers, or a blend of the two. For the sunken patterns, wings are krystal flash and flashabou. Pattern styles are some Hoov’s cicadas (and variations with chenille, dubbing, or wrapped foam for the body), Fat Alberts, and some in the Mr. Wiggly style. Commercially tied patterns that we like are the MFC Card’s Cicada, MFC Cook’s Cicada, and Rio’s Flat Head Cicada. Blane Chocklett has a realistic cicada pattern that looks great, too.
