Friday Five: January 5, 2018
It’s a cold morning here in Central PA – like, wind chill of minus 20 degrees Farhenheit cold. It’s the perfect morning to pour yourself an extra large mug of coffee, grab your blanket, and check out this week’s Friday Five while thinking of slightly warmer temperatures.
(Don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily mind the cold. It’s just really cold for this time of the winter here.)
Gunnar Brammer: Tie Like a Pro
Gunnar Brammer (of Brammer’s Custom Flies) has put together a series to help you become a better fly tyer. There are three videos so far, all of them really helpful with some basics of fly tying (and especially tying streamers). Check them out below!
Streamer Season: Getting into the Game
About 5 years ago, I was out at a spot on Spring Creek throwing a size 4 Weamer Streamer without really knowing much about fishing streamers (other than dead-drifting, swinging them down-and-across, and stripping a bit). The water was up and off-color, the weather was rainy, and on the first cast in a new spot I missed one of the biggest browns I’ve seen on Spring. The fly hit the water and a split second later this large fish porpoised (I could see the entire back of the fish) going after the fly.
Naturally, I did what any fisherman with buck fever would do: promptly pulled the fly right out of the mouth of this brown then stared at the water where it came from, slack-jawed.

5 Flies We Always Carry
One of the articles we featured in “Things Worth Reading” last week was “The Top 5 Trout Flies You Should Carry at All Times.” That got us thinking about the fly patterns we carry and what they would be if we were only limited to five of them.
