It’s January, and that means that for many of us in the north of the Mason-Dixon Line we’re in the midst of winter and the start of fly tying season. (Don’t get me wrong – you can still get out and fish too!)

It’s hard to believe that we’ve hit the end of 2017! This has probably been my least active month at the vice this fall, but I had some fun doing some experimenting.
Friday Five: 12/29/2017
We’ve arrived at the final Friday Five of 2017 – hard to believe! Enjoy this week’s edition as you go into the final holiday weekend of the year, and get ready to ring in 2018.

Just a few of my favorite ornaments on the tree: a carp, Father Christmas, and a jumping trout.
Did you ever finish that Christmas shopping? Congratulations – we knew you could do it! If you need some last minute gifts, your local fly shop is always a great place to check out (our are TCO State College, Flyfisher’s Paradise, and The Feathered Hook if you’re near Coburn). This week we have some podcasts, two tying videos, and some tips on how to choose nymphs.
Enjoy the selection this week, and have a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season!

Snow arrived yesterday and gave us a foretaste of a white Christmas. The temps have been cold, but it’s good to be living in a place where you can fish year-round. This morning is another cold one here in central Pennsylvania, which makes grabbing that hot cup of coffee all the more enjoyable.
We have a video and four articles for you today, ranging from the growing number of women in fly fishing (which is great!) to cleaning your tying desk to treating hypothermia. Enjoy!

Have you done your Christmas shopping yet? This is your friendly reminder to get on it, so you’re not trying to do it the week before Christmas!
Here are the articles and videos for this week – a bit heavy on the video side, but there are some good ones. Grab your coffee and enjoy!

Tree stand coffee always tastes better.
Maybe you’re taking your coffee in the tree stand this morning, or maybe it’s in your usual comfortable chair at home. Either way, we have some good selections for you to enjoy this week. Pour yourself a full cup, sit back, and enjoy!*
*but if you’re in a tree stand or in the woods, enjoy the coffee and save this for later!

Thanksgiving is done, deer season is in full swing, and Christmas is only a few weeks away! Read on to find out what’s been coming from the vice this past month.
The Carp Box
The summer of 2016 was really hot around here, and coupled with a vacation to a place along Lake Michigan, I (Caleb) was looking into what exactly it took to catch carp on a fly rod. Between Jay Zimmerman’s great book, The Best Carp Flies: How to Tie and Fish Them, and a number of good articles on that (including this one), I was intrigued. I’m still learning a lot, so I’ll admit up front that I’m not an expert at all.
Your Daily “Moment of Chill” (from Orvis)
Orvis has a great idea this holiday season: a daily “Moment of Chill.” What exactly is that, you might ask?
