January is coming to an end, one more month of winter is done, and we’re coming onto the shortest month of the year. To help you ease into the final days of January, here are three articles and two videos for this week’s Friday Five.
(Only after compiling this week’s content did I realized that the three articles are all about nymphing and the two videos have to do with streamers.)
Our Fly Tying Video Feature series is designed to help give you some ideas at the vice this winter. We’ve had a number of posts highlighting different styles of flies as well as specific species (caddis, stonefly nymphs, sulphurs). In that same vein, we’re going to highlight the March Brown in this post.
The hope with these Fly Tying Video Features is to help you think of some different patterns to tie at the vice this winter. We’re featuring all different kinds of flies, with each post being a different category. This week we have stonefly nymphs!

Each post is 4-5 patterns on a specific type of “fish food,” whether it’s hellgrammites, articulated streamers, or sulphurs (for example). We’ll be posting those on Mondays and/or Wednesdays over the winter to give you some ideas at the vice.

It’s a cold morning here in Central PA – like, wind chill of minus 20 degrees Farhenheit cold. It’s the perfect morning to pour yourself an extra large mug of coffee, grab your blanket, and check out this week’s Friday Five while thinking of slightly warmer temperatures.
